Implants and implant-supported dentures

One way to replace a missing tooth is to have an implant. This is a metal replica of a tooth root that is placed into the jawbone and a crown is placed on top.

First Dr. Dirk will assess the condition of your jawbone to ensure a successful result can be achieved.

The implant (root) is placed into the jawbone and then a waiting period of a few weeks takes place for the bone to integrate with the implant.

Once Dr. Dirk has reviewed the implant to ensure it’s success he will then take an impression. This impression is sent to our Dental Laboratory where a crown is constructed which will then be attached to the implant post.

The crown is first temporarily placed to see if the colour and fit are correct and only once everyone is happy with the crown it is then permanently fitted.

The success rates for implants have improved tremendously, however there is still a small failure rate. One problem is when the jawbone doesn’t fully integrate with the placed implant. In these cases, the implant is removed and replaced or other options for the replacement of the tooth are investigated.

The life of any dental restoration work hinges on diligent home care and maintenance.

Conscientious home care includes brushing every morning and night, flossing once a day and regular six monthly check ups to review the crown and surrounding teeth.
